Why I don’t play everything you send me

When you book a DJ for a wedding, birthday, corporate event, or any other occasion, you usually have clear ideas about the music you want to hear. Perhaps there are specific songs, artists, or genres that hold a special meaning for you and your guests.

This information is extremely valuable to me as a DJ.

However, I won’t simply play a request list rigidly from top to bottom. That has nothing to do with ignoring your wishes – on the contrary: it is precisely because I take your wishes seriously that I integrate them professionally into the flow of the evening.

A DJ is not a jukebox: The difference between a playlist and an event

A jukebox or Spotify playlist operates rigidly: it waits for input and plays track after track, completely independent of what is happening in the room.

A live event, however, is a dynamic situation. The mood evolves, guests come and go, different age groups interact, and the energy on the dance floor can shift within minutes.

That’s why a professional DJ doesn’t just play a fixed program – especially during a multi-hour event. Their job is to observe throughout the entire evening, read the crowd’s reactions, and make the right decision at the right moment.

The right timing: Why a good song can fail at the wrong moment

This is one of the key differences between a simple music collection and a DJ set: a fantastic song remains a fantastic song – but at the wrong moment, it is still the wrong choice.

Imagine the dance floor is packed and the energy is at its peak. An abrupt genre switch or an overly quiet requested song, no matter how good it is, can instantly break that momentum.

Throughout the event, I constantly receive feedback from the dance floor:

• How are the guests responding to the current track?
• Which age groups are currently dancing?
• Does the crowd need a seamless transition, or can they handle a style change?

Preparation meets flexibility: Your requests as a compass

This doesn’t mean your music requests get lost. Your favorite songs, playlists, and genre preferences form the foundation of my preparation. They show me who you are, what style you like, and what atmosphere you envision for your event. So you very much define the direction.

What a request list cannot provide, however, is flexibility for the evening itself. My preparation establishes the musical framework – the situation on the dance floor determines how I navigate within that frame.
